Autumn days

Chickens love autumn

If you were to think of a list of classic autumnal tasks you’d doubtless guess what we’ve been doing over the last couple of weeks. Raking leaves, gathering windfalls, creosoting fences, trimming hedges… the list goes on. Thankfully the weather has held up to allow us to fit everything in but, since “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” there’s not been a huge amount for us to tell you about on here.

We did give ourselves a couple of hours off from our autumn to-do list on Sunday to visit the National Championship Waterfowl Exhibition – our very first poultry show. Not knowing exactly what to expect (apart from a lot of birds in one place) we came away with a much better idea of the breeds of ducks and geese that we’d like to start keeping next year. If we can find good local suppliers then we’ll hopefully have some Aylesbury ducks and Brecon Buff geese running around our field in the not too distant future. If we can’t then there’s still another half dozen breeds that we’d like to try!
